Peri-implantitis Management

Dental implants can be an excellent option for replacing lost teeth. It closely mimic natural teeth in function and appearance. However, similar to natural teeth, they are also vulnerable to diseases. The most common causes of implant failure are suboptimal oral hygiene, history of advanced gum disease, lack of maintenance and smoking. If bacteria build up on the implant surfaces and is left untreated, it can progress into peri-implantitis, in which bone around the implant is lost. Eventually, the implant loses its anchorage and may need to be replaced.

It is important to note that peri-implant disease can progress much more rapidly than is the case with gum diseases around teeth. Furthermore, it can be difficult to treat.

Having advanced gum disease (periodontitis) significantly increases the risk of complications with dental implants. For this reason, good oral hygiene and maintenance care with your periodontist and your dentist is essential in reducing this risk.
