Implants
Dental implants are a popular option for replacing missing teeth, initially developed in the 1960s and now widely used as an alternative to removable dentures. Implants can support crowns for single missing teeth, bridges for multiple missing teeth, and even full dentures for patients without any teeth.
Extensive research and clinical experience support dental implants as a safe, effective way to replace lost teeth with natural-looking results.
Assessment
Like any reconstruction, it is important to ensure that the foundations are in a good state. We will conduct a thorough physical examination as well as three-dimensional radiographic imaging of your jaws to locate the position for implant placement.
Treatment overview
Implant procedure is usually performed under local anaesthesia in the surgery. A review will take place 1-2 weeks after the procedure, then a healing period of 3-6 months is required for the implant to integrate with the jaw bone. Thereafter, your dentist will take an impression of your mouth in order to construct your new crown or bridges (teeth) that will seat on top of the implants.
Bone graft
In some cases, bone grafts or bone regeneration are needed to prepare the jawbone to be able to support the implant. This may be done either at the same time of implant placement, or in cases of severe deficiency a separate procedure for bone grafting may be required prior to future implant placement. The need for bone grafting may increase overall treatment time prior to the final teeth being placed on the implants.
