Gum Recession

A specialist Periodontal clinic located in Wynnum, Brisbane.

Gum Recession

Gum recession occurs when the gum tissue around your teeth gradually pulls back, exposing the roots of your teeth. This can happen due to several reasons, including brushing too hard, gum disease, thin gum tissues and the position of your teeth in your jaw. This can make the teeth appear longer, and increases sensitivity to hot/cold.

Treatment of gum disease often starts with managing the underlying cause. For example, a gentler and proper brushing technique can help prevent further damage.

In more severe progressive recession, a gum graft procedure may be required to improve the situations. During a gum graft, a thin section of tissues may be taken from the roof of the mouth and placed over the exposed area to restore coverage. This can enhance the appearance and protects the tooth roots.

Results can vary, and it is important to understand that any dental procedure carries risk and complications. We will discuss treatment options alongside with potential risks with you.
